Braxton-Hicks / prodromal contractions
Within the range of normal
Irregular, painless-to-uncomfortable tightening that comes and goes for hours or days, often stronger in the evening. They soften the cervix but don't dilate it in a steady pattern.
Call your healthcare team if
- Contractions become regular — roughly every 5 minutes for 1 hour
- You can't talk through the contractions anymore
- Your water breaks (a gush or slow trickle)
- Vaginal bleeding heavier than a light pink streak
Get emergency care now (call 911)
- Sudden severe belly pain that doesn't ease between contractions
- Heavy bright-red bleeding, especially with pain (possible abruption)
